Our Great Pyreenes livestock guardian dogs are an important part of our business and are loved accordingly. Liz often says that she would be content just raising these dogs because she loves them so much. The advise we received from fellow alpaca ranchers was to get puppies and raise them around the herd but only spend a few seconds with them when feeding because remember...they are working dogs not pets! Like that was really going to happen with Liz! Well...we did get puppies but I would come home and find Liz laying out in the pasture with Bauer and Stormy running and playing, licking her face as she laughed and played with them!
We currently have 3 or better make that 2 1/2 guard dogs because Stormy is a part-time house dog thanks to all the extra time Liz spent with her when she was a puppy! She longs to be with Liz and in the back of her mind she knows Liz feels the same way so I have surrendered and moved some furniture around to fit her 142lb over sized body in the house.
The two "real guard dogs" are Jack Bauer "Bauer" and Lady that are there to "greet" anyone or anything that might want to "pet" an alpaca before we can get to the pasture.
